Start with self-acceptance
Mark Manson states that self-judgements relieves us of the responsibility for our own actions.
But the thing is that you are already perfect as you are and ... you can always be better.
Manson says that if you let go of self-judgement, freedom will come. When you stop feeling awful about yourself, there is nothing to feel numb about anymore. You'll start liking yourself and you'll feel good about taking care of yourself.
In essence: you understand and accept your emotions.
Mark Manson refers with the thinking brain and feeling brain to the limbic brain and the prefrontal cortex.
limbic brain is associated with emotions
prefrontal cortex is responsible for rational thoughts.
When are able to guide your emotion with meaning and purpose, you'll master self-control. You are actually balanced and is means you can easily make decisions, control yourself, master emotional intelligence.
But when you are in imbalance, it seems that it is often related to surpressing emotion. Both brains are not aligned and you are in conflict with yourself and you feel powerless. You lack motivation, you have self-doubt, you are resistant to change. It feels like you are in chaos and have a lot of frustration.
So the question rises ... will you guide your emotion with meaning and purpose or will the irrational impulses take over? When you build in time to think things through and fall back on reason
Over 2,000 years ago, Plato painted a vivid picture of the human soul in his dialogue "Phaedrus". He describe the soul as a chariot, guided by a charioteer and pulled by two very different horses. One horse is noble and disciplined, pulling the soul towards wisdom and virtue. The other horse is wild and uncontrollable, pulling the sould towards temptation and gratification.
The charioteer represents our reason. Reason is tasked with holding the reins and keeping both horses in balance. Mastery of the soul, in the mind of Plato, doesn't mean silencing our desires and irrational impulses. Mastery of the soul means guiding the desires and impulses in harmony with higher values and rational desires. When the noble horse supports our reason and the wild horse is disciplined, the soul will rise upward towards truth and fulfillment.
Self-Mastery is the art of steering your inner voice towards the good life
