If it isn't a clear yes, it's a clear no
Essentialism is not about how to get more done, it's about how to get the right things done.
Essentialism is a systematic, disciplined method for identifying our greatest areas of contribution and for making those activities nearly effortless.
It doesn't mean just doing less for the sake of less either. It's about making the wisest investment of your time and energy in order to operate at your highest point of contributions by doing only what is essential. Essentialists go all out for the things that light a fire within them. They don’t focus on things that they care little about.
If it isn't a clear yes, it's a clear no: we can’t keep deciding on things half-heartedly. We’re either in or out.
Constantly assess situations,
cut out unnecessary junk,
focus on things that make sense.
The 24 hour model:
If you only focus on what is screaming (urgent x important), you don't do work of strategical importance (important but not urgent, yet).
Visualize your work and think of it as:
1. plan your day to work on the important, not urgent stuff.
2. plan your day with something important and urgent.
3. plan your work with a task that is essential and can be done within that day.
Your decision criteria: Ask yourself these questions:
What am I deeply passionate about?
What taps into my talent?
What meets a significant need in the world?
Looking at things through a binary lens can help you decide faster. It also frees up time for things that matter to you.
“You don’t build the life you want by saving time.
You build the life you want, and then time saves itself.
Recognizing that is what makes success possible.”
— Laura Vanderkam
Why Visualize?
Understand the essence
Stimulating dialogue (even if that is an inner dialogue)
Exploring ideas
Improving communication
But above all, it's in your face. It is there. You see it. And when you see it, you can act upon it.
Given that 75% of our neurons are dedicated to visual sense and given that 50% of our brain processing power is dedicated to processing that visual input, it would make great sense to visualize the work you do.
It helps to get things done!
